About the Focke-Wulf FW 190 A-7/R-6 – WWII German Interceptor:The Focke-Wulf 190 was one of the most lethal fighters of World War II, earning the German nickname “Würger” (“Shrike”), a bird that impales its prey on spikes. Known in English as the “Butcher Bird,” the FW 190 was maneuverable, adaptable, and deadly: it was an effective fighter, fighter-bomber, ground-attack fighter, and night fighter.
Making its combat debut in summer 1941, the FW 190 proved superior to many of its rivals and, flown by many of Germany’s top aces, formed part of the backbone of the Luftwaffe’s fighter force for the rest of the war. As Allied bombing campaigns over Germany increased, upgrades adapted the FW 190 to attack bomber formations. The A7 variant entered production in November 1943 and featured a powerful BMW engine and increased firepower. Larger MG131s replaced the small MG17 machine guns, and some units carried rockets as well, making the FW 190A7 a dangerous bomber-hunter.
