Formed by interwar explorers and scientists, the LRDG was a small, all-volunteer unit initially comprised of New Zealanders, such as the men of ‘T’ Patrol. Self-sufficient, innovative, and expert navigators, the LRDG gathered intelligence and wreaked havoc, then vanished into the sea of sand. Allied spies and raiding parties praised the LRDG as the ‘Libyan Desert Taxi Service.’ Shocked enemy troops called them the ‘Ghost Patrol.’ But perhaps the LRDG’s most important role was the Road Watch. Concealed mere yards from Axis supply routes, the LRDG provided vital intelligence to Allied command.

The LRDG customized Chevrolet 30cwt trucks, adding suspension springs, enlarging radiators, and fitting sand channels, but stripping extras such as doors and windscreens. The two-wheel drive trucks were light across soft sand and fuel efficient. The beds overflowed with fuel, radios, and weapons, such as Lewis guns and Vickers Ks, poached from the RAF for their high rate of fire. With ingenuity and specialized equipment, the LRDG embraced the motto, “Not by Strength, by Guile.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0534/7478/7515/files/LRDG30CWT-LongRangeDesertGroupTruck.jpg?v=1770962806
