About the Saturday Afternoon Matinee Playset Pt 5 – WWII German Fuel Truck and Watchtower:
Fighting across the vast expanses of the North African desert in the Second World War, Erwin Rommel quipped that “neither guns nor ammunition are of much use in mobile warfare unless there are vehicles with sufficient petrol to haul them around.” In the desert war, fuel reserves could be decisive. Famous desert marauders, such as the SAS, LRDG, and Free French, launched daring strikes deep behind enemy lines to destroy the vital Axis fuel dumps. To protect the fuel, armed guards rode the trucks and watchtowers surrounded the dumps.
The fifth instalment of the Saturday Matinee collection presents this reality of the desert war. Guarded by the watchtower, the fuel truck stands ready to supply the tanks and trucks headed to the front. But it is not only armies that rely on fuel. The truck rushes to fill up transport aircraft carrying valuable cargo and artifacts, and the tower guards against any adventurer who might try to get in the way.
