About the Ehrhardt E-V/4 – WWI German Armored Car:

The First World War saw the advent of modern military technology ranging from the machine-guns to aircraft and tanks. But long before the first tanks entered battle, armored cars displayed the potential of armored fighting vehicles. One of the first armored cars was the Ehrhardt E-V/4, a 7-ton beast bristling with 3 machine-guns.

The Ehrhardt featured a protected engine at the front and an armored box at the rear that carried a turret and a crew of 8 or 9 men. Although heavy, it had four-wheel drive, a range of 155 miles, and a top speed of about 40mph. While stagnation limited the usefulness of armored cars on the Western Front, the greater distances on the Eastern Front afforded the Ehrhardt with more opportunity for mobility and exploitation. The Ehrhardt served until the end of the war, then became an effective police vehicle and remained in use until 1939.
