About the M3A1 Scout Car  – WWII American Armored Car:

The M3A1 Staff Car was a lightly armored scout car intended to provide reconnaissance and screen advances. Its open top enabled unobstructed views and provided a wide field of fire for the .30 and .50 caliber machine guns mounted on skate tracks. However, despite its unditching roller and four-wheel drive, its poor offroad ability caused it to fail in the cavalry role. Still, its speed and reliability made it popular, and headquarters, engineer, artillery, and medical units used the M3A1 Staff Car in North Africa, Italy, Northwest Europe, and, to a small extent, the Pacific.

By 1943, it largely was replaced by the M8 Greyhound and half-tracks, and the Staff Car was relegated to security and convoy escort duties. Lend-Lease provided more than 11,000 M3A1 Staff Cars to the British, who called it the White Scout Car and used it in almost every theater, as well as the Soviets and Free Belgian, Polish, French, and Czechoslovak units.
