About the Motorcycle with Sidecar – WWII German Light Transport:

Across the expanses of Russia, through the vast desert and along dusty coastal roads of North Africa, and among the twisting lanes of western Europe, motorcycles proved invaluable and adaptable tools, serving as messengers, escorts, and patrol vehicles. They were nimble and quick, but with a sidecar and machinegun attached, they also packed a punch. Germany was the leading user of motorcycles during the Second World War, producing tens of thousands each year.

As war loomed in 1938, the German army requested BMW, a manufacturer of popular motorcycles through the 1930s, to develop a motorcycle and sidecar specifically for military use. The resulting BMW R75 featured an innovative two-wheel drive system, providing power to both the rear wheel and the sidecar wheel, and gear ratios for both road and off-road use. The R75’s technology was intricate but durable, and the motorcycle proved a highly capable and maneuverable vehicle.
