About the KV-1/KV-2 - Soviet Heavy Tank:

Named after People’s Defense Commissioner Kliment Voroshilov, the KV-1 heavy tank was initially not meant for production. Perhaps it should have been named the “Kotin-Stalin” instead; for it was designed by a team led by chief engineer Zh. Kotin, and given direct approval by Stalin himself. Given the slow start to production, few KV-1s were available at the onset of Operation Barbarossa. Quality, not quantity, was the deciding factor, however. Too heavily armored for the Pak-36 and Panzer light tank variants, a single KV-1 blocked any advance of some elements of the 6th Panzer Division for 24 hours.

After encountering heavily fortified defense lines, and seeing the success of the KV-1, a new variant of the Soviet Heavy Tank was ordered. Specially equipped with a heavy Howitzer, the KV-2 was meant to destroy concrete bunkers. The unmistakable profile of the redesigned tank spawned the nicknames “Little Turret” and “Big Turret.” Soviet engineers sacrificed mobility and balance in exchange for firepower; only 334 of the KV-2 were produced. Overall, the Soviet Heavy Tanks surprised German forces and played a key role in the defense against Operation Barbarossa.
