The StuG III Ausf. B was an armored, self-propelled gun. During Operation Barbarossa it was primarily used to deal with machine gun nests, pillboxes, and fortifications. Superior optics allowed it to acquire and engage targets accurately faster and at longer ranges than the Panzer IV. Built on the chassis of the Panzer III, the gun sacrificed an all-round traverse to maintain its low silhouette. To change the direction of fire, the entire vehicle had to be moved left or right using its tracks. The low height of the StuG III Ausf. B made it a smaller target for enemy gunners and easier to camouflage. Once the Wehrmacht were on the back foot, defensively, the gun was used [often in ambushes] as a tank destroyer.
