About the M142 HIMARS® – High Mobility Artillery Rocket System®:

The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System or HIMARS®, is the Lockheed Martin® answer to providing an economic and sustainable artillery solution. The HIMARS brings overwhelming fire support to troops on the ground in any conflict zone. Part of this is the HIMARS capability to be air transportable by a C-130, making it logistically easier to issue to troops. The base design of the HIMARS is a Medium Tactical Vehicles XM1140A1 truck, which provides crossover to other trucks used by artillery batteries, aiding in maintenance and parts compatibility. The truck maintains its original chassis while modifying the bed so that a launch pod containing six rockets can be added. As for the pod itself, the HIMARS can fire the full spectrum of Multiple Launcher Rocket System, MLRS, rockets giving great lethality and precision to the weapons system. Additionally, the HIMARS can support a single Army Tactical Missile System, ATACMS, increasing the lethality of the weapons system.

The HIMARS is generally tasked with expeditionary and quick reaction forces to give a force multiplier in high stress conflict zones. As the United States Army expands the HIMARS fleet through the Army Fleet Expansion Effort, upgrades have been made. This involves the inclusion of a Common Fire Control System, CFCS, between the HIMARS and MLRS. This will ease the training and provide further continuity in artillery units. The HIMARS has also seen action around the world with armies of other nations. This includes the recent conflict in Ukraine where the United States has supplied Ukraine with a fleet of HIMARS and munitions as part of a series of Security Assistance Packages.
