About the Type 97 Chi-Ha – WWII Japanese Medium Tank:
The Type 97 Chi-Ha was the most produced Japanese medium tank of the Second World War. Built from 1938 through the middle of the war, the early version of the Type 97 carried a short barrel, low velocity 57mm main gun, sufficient for the tank’s infantry support role. A capable tank by early-war standards, the Chi-Ha had riveted armor plates, no elevation gear—leaving the gunner to move the gun with his shoulder—and internal communications reliant on push buttons and buzzers.
The Type 97 debuted in the Sino-Japanese War, fought against the Soviet Union at the Battles of Khalkin Gol, then served prominently in the early phases of the Pacific theater of the Second World War. The tank fought in the battle for Singapore and led the invasions of Malaya and Thailand. With a low silhouette, short gun, and semicircular radio antennae, the early war Chi-Ha was a distinctive and common feature of the Pacific battlefields.
