About the British Series III – Lightweight Truck:

Like previous iterations of military light trucks, the British Army’s Light Utility Trucks were the backbone of the armed forces. With over 440,000 built between 1971 and 1985, and serving nations and civilians all over the world, the Series III Land Rover maintained the cosmetics of its predecessor, the IIA, but added better off-road capabilities. Also known as Land Rover 109, the Series III maintained a 109 inch wheel base and a soft canvas top. An initial batch of 9,000 were sent to the British military as upgraded “heavy duty” versions. These received an upgraded suspension and a different chassis cross-member design to handle more adverse terrain—like that of Eastern Europe, where many projected the next war to occur.

While there were many variations of the base Series III, the most prevalent was the 88 inch wheel base lightweight model that was air transportable. The ease of transportation made it a prominent vehicle during the Falkland campaign. With speed in mind, the bulk of British tanks and armored vehicles were left behind. These light utility trucks, as well as Scimitars, offered the ground forces mobility as the invaders were engaged during the war.
