About the Desert Patrol Vehicle – Black Ops Light Assault Vehicle:

The desert is a unique terrain that militaries have learned to adapt to—predominantly through trial and error. The terrain, harsh weather, and lack of vegetation make it unique among the biomes of the world. Standard vehicles normally cannot withstand the harsh heat, incessant dust storms, and lack of paved roadways. Specialized equipment is required. Of that equipment, none is more unique than the Desert Patrol Vehicle (DPV).

Based off the Fast Attack Vehicle Program (FAV) of the 1980s, the DPV looks like a civilian dune buggy. The characteristics of the two may be similar, but the DPV is a highly mobile, off-road, attack and reconnaissance vehicle. The DPV first saw action during Operation Desert Storm where its mobility was utilized by special operations units—mainly SEALs. The DPV gave SEALs a fast, lightly armored option for infiltration of known targets with the ability to quickly evade and exfiltrate once the job was done. The desert dune buggy is powered by a rear mounted 200hp, 2.0-liter air-cooled VW engine. With this, the DPV can attain speeds of 60+ mph and have a range of over 200 miles—although an optional bladder can be added to extend the range. Its small size means the DPV can be transported by CH-53 and Chinook helicopters. The DPV carries a two or three-man team, which includes a driver and gunners. The DPV bristles with firepower. A M2HB .50 caliber Browning machine gun sits atop while two 7.62X51 M60 machine guns are mounted on the sides. For a bit more firepower against larger threats, a pair of M136 AT4 anti-armor shoulder-fired rocket launchers are mounted to the sides of the top rail. Variations of the loadout exist with options to include a Mk 19 grenade launcher, M240 machine gun, or M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. The DPV uniqueness and prowess as a vehicle of special operations has given it wide recognition in the form of movies, tv shows, and books. Today, an up-armored version, known as the Light Strike Vehicle (VSL) has largely replaced the DPV.
