About the Old Faithful – WWII British Field Marshall's Staff Car:
Taking command of the British 8th Army in August 1942 and tasked with reversing Allied fortunes in North Africa, General Bernard Montgomery visited frontline troops, passing out cigarettes and giving pep talks to raise morale. Whisking Monty between the units was the powerful, reliable Humber Super Snipe Staff Car. Becoming a common sight, the Snipe formed part of Monty’s distinctive image, along with his sweater and black tanker’s beret. At the wheel was Monty’s loyal driver, John Burford, who won the Military Medal, one of Britain’s highest military honors, for courage in action in Italy.
The Humber Snipe originally was a civilian car, but it was renamed the Super Snipe and modified for military use, with a wider wheelbase, greater ground clearance, and, in the desert, low pressure tires and an open top. Nicknamed “Old Faithful” after it carried Monty across North Africa and Italy with little special servicing, the command car now sits in the Imperial War Museum in London.
