About the U-96 Conning Tower – Type VIIc U-Boat Display:ALARM! The captain jumps down the conning tower hatch as the crew prepares to dive, and the laughing green sawfish emblem of U-96 slips beneath the waves. In moments, the submarine is dodging depth charges or unleashing its devastating torpedoes upon unsuspecting merchantmen. Serving with the 7th U-Boat Flotilla out of St. Nazaire, France, U-96 participated in 11 wolfpack patrols and sank or damaged 32 Allied ships between 1940 and 1943. War correspondent Lothar-Günther Buchheim accompanied U-96 on patrol in 1941 and shared his experience in the novel and film, Das Boot.
Type VIIC U-Boats carried about 50 crewmen and 14 torpedoes for five torpedo tubes, as well as an 88mm deck gun and a 2cm antiaircraft gun. Diesel engines provided a surface speed of 18 knots and a range of 8,500 nautical miles, but when submerged the electric engines forced a slower speed and shorter range. More than 500 were built during the war, making the Type VIIC the workhorse of the Kriegsmarine’s U-Boat fleet.
NOTE: Production has been split into two batches. The first 20 kits will be shipped right away. After these have sold out, we will be taking preorders for the second half of the production. This is limited edition and there will be no follow up production once the preorders have been fulfilled.
