In accordance with the "Wartime Steam Locomotive Plan" drawn up by the German Third Reich Government in 936, the 50 class (1939) was the first freight locomotive to be mass-produced in wartime, with a simple structure and light axle weight.

It was not until 1942, when the scarcity of strategic materials increased and large locomotives were desperately needed to support the tight transportation of goods, that the full-scale project was launched. Prototype 1 (52 001), a simpler version of the 50UK class, was built in the same year. The second prototype (52 002) was built in the same year, and its design was officially adopted as the Baureihe 52 steam locomotive.

Full-scale production began in 1944. All the leading locomotive manufacturers in the German Reich, who had produced locomotives for the German State Railways, were mobilised for the mass production of this class.

However, due to Germany's defeat in the war, only 6,248 locomotives were actually completed for the German State Railways. (From Wikipedia)
