About the JSDF Komatsu LAV – Light Armored Scout Car:
The versatile Komatsu Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) joined the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) in the early 2000s, and today it continues to help meet the needs of modern ground forces, providing mobility, firepower, and protection. The Komatsu LAV is quick, making it an asset for reconnaissance work; it features a large interior, allowing it to serve as a troop and supply transport; and it carries a 20mm cannon, enabling it to provide general battlefield support.
The Komatsu has a top speed of about 60mph, a 200-mile range, a tight-turning radius, and amphibious capabilities, making it a useful and flexible tool for operations in coastal areas, islands, and urban environments. Its 20mm cannon is mounted in a rotating turret and can engage both land and air targets, and the LAV’s armor provides small arms protection. The Komatsu LAV deployed to Kuwait and Iraq before ceasing production in 2017, but it remains in service today.
