While the famous Tiger seized the headlines, the workhorse Panzer IV seized the battlefield. The only German tank in continuous production, the Panzer IV was the most numerous German tank of the war. Originally intended as an infantry support tank, the Panzer IV took on anti-armor duties as the German war machine encountered more powerful enemy tanks. Its large turret ring could carry bigger guns, and the Panzer IV received numerous upgrades. The Ausf. G variant, debuting in March 1942, boasted a long 7.5cm KwK 40 L/43 gun, capable of penetrating over three inches of armor at long range. The variant increased the frontal armor to 80mm, providing greater protection for the five-man crew. The Ausf. G also introduced engine vents and coolant-heating systems, preparing the Panzer IV for diverse battlefields.

The Panzer IV served on every German front, from the deserts of North Africa, to the fields of France, to the frozen steppe of Russia. It was exported in large quantities to Germany’s European allies, and numerous captured Panzer IVs saw service in the Russian army. Accounting for about 30% of Germany’s tank force, the Panzer IV was the backbone of German armor.
