About the Tempest Mk.V – WWII British Fighter Aircraft:
The Hawker Tempest made its combat debut over Normandy in June, 1944, scoring rousing victories that foreshadowed its dominance for the rest of the war. Fast, powerful, and steady, the Tempest was well-suited to defend London against the V-1 rockets; in one of their first days in this role, Tempests claimed 13 kills. While they also proved effective deterrents against the new German jet fighters, Tempests made their name as successful ground attack aircraft.
Heavily-armed and the fastest low-altitude fighters of the war, Tempests destroyed hundreds of locomotives and trucks in rear areas and armored vehicles and gun emplacements with precision in support of front-line troops.Intended as the latest iteration of the Typhoon, the Tempest received its own designation as the upgrades mounted and the planes’ differences outweighed their similarities. The Mk. V featured a distinctive 4-bladed propellor and a Napier Sabre engine that provided a top speed of 435mph. In addition to bombs or drop tanks, the Tempest Mk. V bristled with four 20mm cannons.
