About the MH-X Ghost Hawk

Stealth helicopters have been in development since the Vietnam War. These early adaptations of stealth focused on reduction in noise rather than radar evasion. However, real advancement occurred in 1978 when the U.S. Army Research and Technology Laboratory and Sikorsky Corporation began work on structural cross sections that reduced radar detection. These designs were applied to the early UH-60 Blackhawk®. As prototypes were developed, there was much secrecy surrounding the various stealth projects of the DoD. In fact, much of what is known about the projects has only been recently made public, largely due to the highly studied Operation Neptune Spear where Sikorsky MH-X Ghost Hawk helicopters were used by the 160th SOAR to insert a team of Naval Special Warfare Developmental Group (DEVGRU) SEALS. During the operation, an MH-X crashed as it approached Osama Bin Laden’s compound. While the details behind the crash are only speculative, it may have had to do with lift reduction caused by hot air and poor aerodynamics. These helicopters proved more difficult to handle as well, as measures were taken to improve the stealthiness of the craft.

While Operation Neptune Spear was a success and highly publicized, the MH-X still hides behind a shadow. Many depictions and renderings of the rotor craft are educated guesses on what the craft should look like. As with many secretive weapons of the United States, we may never know the full capabilities of the MH-X.
