By the time Operation Barbarossa commenced, light half-track vehicles such as the SdKfz 10 were a staple of the Wehrmacht. Its design allowed for excellent off-road mobility, and the rear could be reconfigured to suit several needs. Rather than being towed, for example, artillery pieces were often installed in the passenger area to serve as mobile gun platforms. This left the vehicle free to tow additional hardware or munitions. Given the widespread deployment of men and artillery pieces across the Eastern Front, the SdKfz 10 was integral in preparing Hitler’s invading force.
